Arnau Sala Martí

Biotechnology Graduate, Master in Advanced Biotechnology and PhD in Environmental Science and Technology, all from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. My thesis deals with the valorization of…

My name is Arnau Sala and I am from Catalonia (Osona). I did my studies and PhD at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). I have a degree in biotechnology, a master’s in advanced biotechnology, and a PhD in environmental science and technology. Since the beginning of my PhD, I have been fascinated by the bioconversion of solid waste into bioproducts in the context of the circular economy.

My interest includes both the production of these bioproducts and their subsequent application. To study this, I use solid-state fermentation processes, with which I biotransform waste, mostly from the agri-food industry, into bioproducts of interest. My focus has been on the use of fungi to obtain biopesticides and biostimulants, and their effect against insect pests.

I have mostly worked at the UAB, within the framework of the BIOPRO and FERTILAB projects, but I have also been in Denmark, specifically studying the effects of these products on insects (both during my thesis and in my postdoctoral stage). I also worked at the Eurecat Foundation, where I participated in several projects focused on waste bioconversion, including the European project HEREWEAR.

Here at CREAF, I will be part of the PROTECSOLS group with Xavier Domènech and Sara Marañon, where we will study:

  • The application of biopesticides and biostimulants on crops.
  • Their influence on soil quality.
  • Their effect on insect pests and their ecotoxicological effects in the context of regenerative agriculture.

I am also highly interested in teaching and hope to continue developing this professional facet within CREAF and in collaboration with the UAB.

Although most of my research has been carried out in the lab, I equally enjoy both indoor and outdoor activities. You can find me reading and playing board games (I am a member of a board game club), running, cycling, hiking, or climbing (the latter only indoors, for now). Lastly, I also enjoy concerts and beer. Of course: all activities are best enjoyed in good company.
