Postdoctoral researcher

Paula Bruna Pérez

I hold a PhD in Fine Arts and a master’s degree in Environmental Sciences. I research human societies' relationships with their ecological environment through science, speculative fiction, and art.

I’m Paula Bruna (Barcelona, 1978), a PhD in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona and a bachelor’s and master’s degree holder in Environmental Sciences from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Between 2022 and 2024, I was a Margarita Salas postdoctoral researcher at the Barcelona Botanical Institute-CSIC and the Department of Animal Biology, Plant Biology, and Ecology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Currently, I am a lecturer at BAU University Center.

As an environmental scientist and artist, I research the relationships between human societies and their ecological environment from non-human perspectives. My main hypothesis is that exploring viewpoints different from the current anthropocentric perspective generates knowledge, impacts ecological awareness, and broadens the spectrum of possible ways of coexistence. In my research, I combine a scientific foundation, speculative fiction, and artistic practices.

In recent years, I have developed projects such as El Plantoceno, Ecofictions, The Other Residents, La Forêt Noire, and Embolismo por soleá. The results of my research have been presented at conferences, publications, workshops, and exhibitions in venues such as Arts Santa Mònica (Barcelona), La Capella (Barcelona), the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), Kunstraum Lakeside (Klagenfurt, Austria), MEIAC (Badajoz), and Palacio de los Condes de Gabia (Granada). My work has received several artistic research grants from the University of Barcelona, the Barcelona Institute of Culture (Barcelona City Council), the Office of Cultural Initiative Support (Government of Catalonia), and I have recently been awarded the Leonardo BBVA grant for researchers and cultural creators.
