PIPOL: Wild Pollinator Diagnosis Project in Catalonia
Wild pollinators in Catalonia: Report on status, threats and priority areas of action for their conservation
The purpose of this report is to compile and systematize the scientific information currently available to develop and implement the Intersectoral Plan for the Conservation of Wild Pollinators in Catalonia. The issue surrounding pollinator declines is broad and complex, and this has influenced the structure and content of this report.
The report consists of two clearly differentiated parts.
The first part includes a diagnosis of the importance of pollination and pollinators; an analysis of the status and population trends of pollinators; the identification and description of the causes of declines and their consequences for plant pollination, both wild and cultivated; an analysis of the relationship between pollinators and agriculture, both from the perspective of the ecosystem service of pollination and from the perspective of intensive agriculture as a key factor in pollinator decline; and, finally, a chapter on the challenges and knowledge gaps that need to be addressed to advance the search for solutions. Throughout the text of this first part, both a general view of the situation of wild pollinators globally and in Europe and a focus on the Catalan territory are provided, allowing the identification of knowledge gaps about pollinators in Catalonia. Each chapter includes a section with the corresponding scientific and technical bibliographic references. The first part concludes with a chapter on the main conclusions and key messages that can be drawn as a result of the diagnosis.
The second part of the document identifies the priority areas where the actions of the Intersectoral Plan for the Conservation of Wild Pollinators should focus, based on the diagnosis and the analysis of strategic planning instruments, both national and international, currently in force. It also proposes some of the measures that could be considered in the Plan, taking into account the main risk factors and threats affecting pollinators and the opportunities and favorable synergies that may exist in the specific context of the Catalan territory.
