Regions4 welcomes CREAF as a new member specializing in scientific knowledge on biodiversity

CREAF joins the Regions4 global network, to contribute its scientific knowledge and expertise on biodiversity. The international organization aims at being the global voice of sub-national governments in negotiations at the United Nations, the European Union and in global discussions on climate change, biodiversity and sustainable development. The alliance between CREAF and Regions4 reinforces the work that the center already carries out as a scientific collaborator of local governments, research centers, companies and networks of centers with a regional scope.

In the words of Alicia Pérez-Porro, scientific coordinator of CREAF, "we bring the value of science and we firmly believe in tackling the current biodiversity crisis on several fronts, bearing in mind that it is multifaceted, that goes hand in hand with the climate crisis and must also contemplate gender equality, the social crisis and climate justice. And, for this reason, it is essential to collaborate with various actors and entities".

Another Spanish research center that is a member of Regions4 is the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), which at the last general assembly made public the RegionsAdapt report and the community of practice 'Climate justice and integration of vulnerable populations' in adaptation planning'.

Active international support

Regions4 supports its members around the world to strengthen their capacity for innovative action and global advocacy, while promoting the enabling conditions and the scientific assessment for implementing climate goals, as well as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. In addition, at the organization's annual meeting, the active work of the Secretariat and the European Committee of the Regions and Under2Coalition to contribute to the Global Stocktake (GST) and the Global Adaptation Objective (GGA) was highlighted , to ensure that the progress and challenges of regional governments are taken into account.

Regions4 was created in 2022 and represents 41 regional governments, from 21 countries belonging to 4 continents.

Regions4 was created in 2002 at the Johannesburg World Summit and organized as the Network of Regional Governments for Sustainable Development. It represents 41 regional governments, from 21 countries belonging to 4 continents. The organization is officially recognized by several entities of the United Nations system, such as UNFCCC, CBD, UNDESA, UNEP and UNDP.

CREAF's membership was made public at the general assembly of this international organization, held in the summer of 2023 and which brought together representation from several sub-national governments around the world. The rest of the new members come from the Brazilian state of Paraná, the French region of Auvergne Rhone Alpes and the Mexican state of Yucatan. At the meeting, the lines of action for the next financial year were considered, as well as the key milestones achieved the previous year, and it was opened by Arantxa Tapia, Minister of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment of the Autonomous Government of the Basque Country , followed by a powerful message from Razan Al Mubarak, UN High-Level Climate Change Champion for COP28. The central parliament of the event was handled by the Peruvian lawyer Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, representative of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
