The Cocoon system: ecotechnology for ecological restoration and agriculture in the Mediterranean basin

A new system known as "Cocoon" increases the survival of seedlings up to 90% during this critical moment. This methodology has been implanted in many countries of the world, with a remarkable success.

Climate change is causing changes in temperature and precipitation in the Mediterranean basin. These changes are increasingly affecting the availability of water. This situation causes problems for the agricultural, forestry and garden sectors in Catalonia, which progressively find more difficulties in planting in drylands without supportive irrigation. One of the main factors that difficult the success of these plantations without access to water is the water stress suffered by plants during the first summer drought.

In this context a new system known as "Cocoon" increases the survival of seedlings up to 90% during this critical moment. This methodology has been implanted in many countries of the world, with a remarkable success.

The following project consists in the creation of a demonstration itinerary that will show the benefits of the "Cocoon" methodology on three of the main applications of this device: restoration of agro-silvo- pastoral (pasture), ecological restoration of degraded natural areas (river forest) and establishment of extensive dry land crops (olive tree plantation).

Starting with a comprehensive dissemination program aimed at the various agents of the forest, agricultural and garden sector, which will include technical seminars and training, development of leaflets, posters and a video explaining the project, it will be possible to make a wide dissemination of this methodology and promote the use among the sectors mentioned.
