The Cocoon system: ecotechnology for ecological restoration and agriculture in the Mediterranean basin
A new system known as "Cocoon" increases the survival of seedlings up to 90% during this critical moment. This methodology has been implanted in many countries of the world, with a remarkable success.
The climate change is causing changes in temperature and precipitation in the Mediterranean basin, increasingly affecting the availability of water. This situation poses problems for the agricultural, forestry, and gardening sectors in Catalonia, which progressively face more difficulties in carrying out viable dryland plantations, conducting reforestation of degraded areas, or maintaining landscaped areas without irrigation support. One of the main factors hindering the success of these plantations without water access is the water stress that the saplings suffer during the first summer drought.
"LandLifeCompany" is a company that has developed a system known as "Cocoon" that increases sapling survival by up to 90% during this critical period. This low-cost methodology, with no harmful effects on the environment, has been implemented in numerous countries worldwide with remarkable success.
The project presented below consists of creating a demonstration trail located at the Can Moragues farm (Riudarenes, La Selva). This demonstration trail will visually, easily accessible, and didactically show the benefits of the "Cocoon" methodology, showcasing three of the main applications of this device in a route of only 1.4 km in length: restoration of agro-silvo-pastoral systems (dehesa), ecological restoration of degraded natural areas (riparian forest), and establishment of extensive dryland woody crops (olive tree plantation).
Based on a comprehensive dissemination program targeting various stakeholders in the forestry, agricultural, and gardening sectors, which will include technical workshops and trainings, development of brochures, posters, and a project explanatory video, wide promotion of this methodology will be achieved and its use among the mentioned sectors will be encouraged.
