CLIMABOSC
Forests and climate change mitigation
The effects of climate change on Catalan forests will be investigated, especially the impact of the reduction in water availability. The study will explore the usefulness of selective thinning to preserve forests and the ecosystem services they provide, and will analyze proposed tree planting as a tool to offset fossil fuel emissions. The project will use experimental field studies, data mining and processing, and remote sensing and GIS techniques. The objective is to generate useful information to identify the best forest management practices to mitigate the impacts of climate change and guarantee a sustainable supply of water, in addition to all other ecosystem services linked to carbon capture, biodiversity conservation, forestry explotation, well-being and tourism. The findings will contribute to the development of effective policies and strategies for forest management and ecosystem services in Catalonia.
