The critical role of women in a climate emergency context involves recognizing their dedication to caring for people and cohesion and their vulnerability, among many other cases, both in developed and developing countries. The context is more critical in countries in economic development, because poverty, lack of access to international and national sources of financing, the fact of not owning agricultural land and the perpetuation of non-respectful ways of doing things (to quote some causes) complicate the situation.

“Ah, right, so you’re in charge?" The question and the look of surprise speak for themselves. The researcher cannot believe what he has just found out: that the leader of the new international research project he is taking part in is a young woman. This real-life experience and others like it have prompted a campaign with the slogan“It happens in science too”, which CREAF is set to launch this week to mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

The director of CREAF joins the institutional campaign #ICOMMIT and makes public his personal commitment in favor of equality between men and women within the scientific world. His commitment aims to raise his voice against the so-called manel or all-man panels.

Women represent less than 30% of the world's research personnel. In Spain, they occupy only 25% of the female professorships. At CREAF, only 21% of the principal investigators are women.

CREAF has begun 2020 with a new institutional body, the Gender Equality Committee (CIOG), which is responsible for ensuring equal opportunities in the Centre.

Ending perceptions of women and other disadvantaged groups simply as victims and instead empowering them as decision-makers in natural resource management are basic steps to deal with ecological crises more effectively. A new collection of studies addresses global environmental change from a feminist and interdisciplinary perspective.
