Marcos Fernández
BSc in Environmental Sciences by the Universitat de Barcelona (2010) and MSc in Terrestrial Ecology by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (2011). In 2011 he started his PhD thesis at CREAF-UAB under the supervision of Prof. Josep Peñuelas (CREAF-CSIC) and Dr. Sara Vicca (Universiteit Antwerpen, Belgium), investigating the availability of nutrients and the human impact on the functioning of ecosystems. He then took up a postdoctoral research position at CREAF for a year and a half, after which he won two fellowships (BOF, FWO) at the Universiteit Antwerpen (Belgium) under the supervision of Prof. Ivan Janssens. Simultaneously he was junior coordinator of the Imbalance-P project (ERC-Synergy grant). At the end of 2021 he rejoined CREAF with a Junior Leader fellowship from the La Caixa Foundation, to investigate how the elemental composition of organisms determine ecosystem functioning and their own.
He obtained an ERC-Starting Grant-2022 awarded by the European Research Council, which allows him to promote the STOIKOS project.
