MODOSIN

Monitoring and modelling integrated into a warning system of mountain forests' vulnerability

The MODOSIN project, funded by Organismo Autónomo Parques Nacionales (ref. 2466/2017), aims to establish a historial baseline of the vulnerability to drought-induced decline of the forests in the National Parks of the Pyrenean range, and to develop and integrated monitoring and alert system of episodes of drought-induced decline and corresponding increase in wildfire risk.

There is a tight link between climate and vegetation. There is thus no doubt that a climate change of the magnitude we are experiencing will cause important alterations in forest structure, composition and functioning. These changes can be rapid and in our latitudes will mainly occur as a result of lowered water availability and the corresponding increase in related diturbances (particulary droughts, wildfires and pests).

- Project actions - (1) establish a historical baseline of the  vulnerability to drought-induced decline of the forests in the National Parks of the Pyrenean range (PN Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici and PN Ordesa y Monte Perdido), (2) develop and integrated monitoring and alert system of episodes of drought-induced decline and corresponding increase in wildfire risk, (3) assess future vulnerability to drought stress and associated wildfire risk in the study areas under climate change in the mid-term (period 2020-2070).
