Jofre Carnicer, honored by the ICREA Acadèmia 2024 program
Jofre Carnicer, a researcher at the Institute for Research on Biodiversity (IRBio) affiliated with CREAF, professor of Ecology at the University of Barcelona (UB), and contributor to the IPCC since 2018, has been recognized by the ICREA Acadèmia 2024 program for his outstanding scientific career.
This program aims to enhance the research of university professors at a prominent stage in their careers, providing funding to support their research projects for a five-year period.
A career focused on the impacts of climate change
A career focused on the impacts of climate change
Carnicer’s research explores how climate change affects Mediterranean ecosystems, with a particular emphasis on forest responses and plant-animal interactions. As a member of the IPCC, he contributed to the 6th Assessment Report (Working Group II), published in 2022, which examines the global effects of climate change, associated risks, and pathways for sustainable adaptation.
He currently leads the ECO-FUN project (on forest functional responses to climate pressures) and MICROCLIM (focused on microclimatic variability and carbon sinks). He has also recently directed the REGIME-SHIFTS project, which investigates the impacts of droughts and global warming, as well as their implications and mitigation strategies.
Teaching and educational innovation
Teaching and educational innovation
As a professor, Jofre Carnicer teaches ecology at UB, covering key topics such as climate change, critical transitions in ecosystems and society, protected area management, conservation biology, and sustainable development. Additionally, he is an active member of the Teaching Innovation Group in Ecology and Global Change (GIDEC), promoting innovative educational approaches in this field.
The recognition by the ICREA Acadèmia program will enable him to further his research, strengthening his commitment to producing scientific evidence that supports the conservation and adaptation of Mediterranean ecosystems in the face of accelerated climate change.
