A pioneering initiative in Spain that provides access to a bank of historical images of the Catalan territory taken by Landsat satellites between 1972 and today.
The SatCat collects and offers to the public a bank of hundreds of images of the Catalan territory taken by Landsat satellites between 1972 and 2011. This is a historic pioneer action in Spain, coming from the wish of the Research Group of Methods and Applications in Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information Systems (GRUMETS). During the last decade, GRUMETS has been sorting and loading the server with all the images of Catalonia from the most important satellite of the world for the Earth observation at a detailed scale, the Landsat. Its aim has been to offer the world, and for free, all this information. Born as an initiative of the Documentation Centre of Environment of the Catalan Government in 2004, the server has been enriched with hundreds of historical images and came out on the Internet, where can be found at the following adress: http://opengis.uab.cat/wms/satcat/index.htm.
