Irene Raya Moreno
PhD in Terrestrial Ecology in 2018 by the Autonomous University of Barcelona, with the course taught in collaboration with CREAF. Her research studies the effects of biochar application in Mediterranean soils on carbon dynamics. Her main research interest focuses on the study of carbon stability to reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere. She is currently a technician in the consolidated research group on soil protection PROTECSOLS and, specifically, in the RestArc project (Research, innovation and promotion of the use of amendments and organic waste in soil restoration), funded by the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda of the Generalitat de Catalunya. She is also involved in the BIDEKO project (Biodegradable and compostable batteries for precision agriculture and decentralized energy Systems), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation.
She holds a degree in Biology with a specialisation in ecology from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (2010). Between 2010 and 2013 she participated in several CREAF projects, such as the study of marmot populations, ant dynamics and behaviour in areas that have suffered a fire, bee behaviour and distribution of Taxus baccata in the Iberian Peninsula.
She has completed a Master's degree in Management and Restoration of the Natural Environment at the University of Barcelona. Thanks to her master's thesis, in 2012 she studied ecosystem services related to aquatic ecosystems at the James Hutton Institute (Scotland). She then received the Leonardo grant at the same Scottish centre, thanks to which she participated in a study on the effects of climate change on the distribution of lichens.
