CREAF collaborates with the company CREAST for a more sustainable entertainment industry

The entertainment industry emissions have been known to surpass those of aerospace, clothing, hotel and semiconductor industries, according to data from the Producers Guild of America, a non-profit trade organisation representing television, film and new media production companies in the USA, which also publishes The New York Times. This reality has attracted the attention of Eduardo Vieitez, director of the technology company CREAST, whose mission is to reduce CO₂ emissions in the entertainment industry, with a special focus on film. For this reason, and with the aim of reducing this impact, CREAST has recently joined forces with the CREAF scientific research centre to promote and offer innovative forms of compensation to decarbonise the film, television, advertising and events industry. In addition to the focus on climate change, both organizations agree on their relationship with the geographical area of ​​the Mediterranean.

The collaboration between CREAF and CREAST will offer the audio-visual sector to invest in research for the sustainability of Mediterranean ecosystems and the services they provide (pure air, clean water, pollinators, etc.), in the context of climate change and its consequences. To this end, CREAF provides its scientific expertise and rigour on the impact of climate change in the areas influenced by this small, enclosed sea, which warms up 20% faster than other marine waters.

The collaboration between CREAF and CREAST offers the audiovisual sector to invest in research for the sustainability of Mediterranean ecosystems and the services they provide, in the context of climate change.

As part of the collaboration agreement, CREAST plans to generate new indicators to analyse the sustainability of film productions, among other activities, with the active collaboration of Enrique Doblas, CREAF researcher involved in this collaboration. The methodology of this young company is based on its own digital solution, created in 2021 and based on big data and the cloud to predict, measure, reduce and neutralize the environmental impact of CO₂ emissions. In his first year of professional activity, the company avoided the emission of 3Kg of CO₂ per minute from various entertainment activities. Since then, CREAST has worked on large audio-visual productions and events, such as the 2022 editions of the Goya Awards gala and the San Sebastian International Film Festival.

Both Eduardo Viéitez, CREAST director, and Enrique Doblas, CREAF researcher, agree on the opportunity for cooperation between both organizations.
